Types of Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flowmeters and Their Components

The KATflow 200 is one of JLC International’s portable clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters. They have a weight of less than 700 grams, making it a very light and portable flowmeter that can be carried in one hand. The KATflow 200 is an ideal tool for use in a confined space.

Due to its robust housing with a rubber shock protector, the flowmeter is suitable for applications in tough industrial conditions. As with all other Katronic clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters, the KATflow 200 offers an intuitive instrument menu and Setup Wizard that guides the user step-by-step through the meter configuration. The correct installation of the clamp-on sensors on the pipe is made easy by the incorporated Audible Sensor Positioning Assistant, which gives the user visual and audible indications during sensor mounting.

The KATflow 200 can be equipped with an internal data logger, which is available in two sizes to store up to 30,000 or 100,000 measurements. Each measurement is comprised up to ten units, and are able to express:

  • Velocity
  • Volume
  • Mass units

These can be selected by the user before each measurement.
In combination with a data logger, the KATflow 200 is supplied with the KATdata+ software. It enables the user to download and visualize the flow data on a computer after the measurement or in real-time, using the embedded terminal function. The data can be transferred via RS 232 or USB.

The portable KATflow 230 has a standard of two measuring channels, providing a range of outputs to accommodate different types of data storage devices and measuring inputs for wall thickness, as well as the temperature of the liquid up and downstream.

Due to their capability of determining energy transmission, they are particularly useful for the building industry, while also frequently used within the food and drink industry where heating and chilling applications are essential parts of the production process.

The clamp-on mounting technique of the flow and temperature sensors enables the flowmeter to measure the heat quantity non-invasively and non-intrusively from outside of the pipe. For this reason, there is no need to cut into the pipe, and therefore no interruption of flow, no pressure drop, and no risk of a leakage.

The greatest benefits of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters are their cost-effectiveness and versatility. Because they are non-intrusive, they do not cause a pressure drop and can be used in non-conductive fluids. They can measure both high and low flows as well as operate in harsh and hazardous environments with easy data transfer.
